This is seemingly the message of My Oni Girl, the second original anime film that Studio Colorido has produced for Netflix. The film’s eye-catching animation and intriguing blend of fantasy and real worlds are sure to get some thumbs to the play button – however, the simple story never quite reaches the potential it’s going for. Anyone who’s seen even a few anime films might have trouble shaking the feeling they’ve seen this all done better before.
Our main protagonist, Hiiragi, is a high school boy with a reserved demeanor and a pretty milquetoast personality. It quickly becomes obvious this isn’t entirely his fault – no matter how much he reaches out to the kids at school, they see it as an opportunity to take advantage of him. At home, he’s belittled by his father, who attempts to force his philosophy of “do what I say and you can’t go wrong.” His inability to help someone in need is quickly recognized by Tsumugi, a young oni with all the spunk and ambition that Hiiragi lacks. She pulls him into a journey to find her mother – the biggest risk Hiiragi’s ever taken in his life, and one that will help both of them uncover the feelings they’ve tried so desperately to shove aside."
