Three years back, Anime Superhero poster Revelator was kind enough to transcribe old DCAU articles (from Comics Scene and Starlog and the like), allowing people who weren't around back then / can't afford to buy them on eBay to read them and see the thought that went into creating BTAS, STAS, etc. As an archivist like Revelator, I wanted to provide a similar resource to all of you.

In the past three years, I've taken up scrapbooking. This has involved acquiring old magazines featuring DCAU articles (except Comics Scene #31, which is prohibitively expensive as it's considered an early appearance of Harley Quinn) and researching my old Watchtower notes to find online resources and articles that have fallen into the Internet's cracks. A lot of this stuff -- including material from the old Toon Zone -- is only available on the Internet Archive, and then only if you have the right URL. I'm presenting it here in chronological order allowing everyone to again have access to it. Hopefully this will prove to be an important resource.

NOTE: Due to reasons not worth going into, I am unable to link to Comics Continuum webpages on this message board. In the interest of historical preservation of interviews from two decades ago, I am posting those interviews in the thread. They are identified as "CC."

All O Squad. lol. Stuff about Wells made sense, making less a direct reference to Legacy to avoid confusion for new comers.

I updated them. The second one needed fixing, but the first one is weird. When you click on it, scroll down and look for the link that says "Beyond Bumps Boyd's Batman By-Product." Click on it, and it will take you to the right page.

Well that's pretty cool. Does anyone have the article where Dini talks about the scrapped Batman DTV with the Ventriloquist? It was probably the Justice League cameo'd one he mentions in the '04 interview but I've never found it again. It sounded hilarious- a woman infiltrates Scarface's gang and flirts with him to become his "moll," Arnie gets jealous and puts Mr. Scarface away to hit on her himself; then chases himself around with the dummy trying to shoot him for being a two timer. As only Dini could describe it, obviously.

There was a podcast interview where he talked about it, at the 1 hr 18 mark. It was part of the Batman/Plastic Man segment in the unmade BTAS/TNBA DTV The Brave & The Bold. Dini said, "Direct to video was he had a gang and there was a girl in the gang and she was flirting with Scarface and somehow this was not happening with the Ventriloquist so the Ventriloquiest was kind of coming onto her and she was encouraging his attention and the Ventriloquist was the odd man out and it was very weird."

But in a way we got Lady Clayface anyway with Inque.
Honestly, the below quote sounds like early thoughts on "Growing Pains" to me. (Bold added for emphasis)

JA: Clayface is coming back from the dead?

PD:

Well, he's in the story. Whether it's a story that happened before or after he died, I don't know, I don't care. He was in the comic book, so he's in there. That's Clayface's story. He's back for one last appearance. We may reestablish him because we like the character. We like the fact that we were able to kill him off, but we're also thinking about creating a new Clayface or some element of him survived without Matt Hagen's personality attached to it. We're still figuring out ways to go with Clayface.

JA: A Lady Clayface, maybe?

PD:
We thought about that. There's one in the comics, and she's able to do everything old Matt Hagen used to do.
I remember when I first read about Clayface eventually being put into an exoskeleton in a 1992 Comics Scene preview of BTAS (a plot element which happened in the late BTAS episode "Mudslide"), I thought, "Oh, wow! They're evolving the shapeshifting Matt Hagen Clayface II into the dissolving, exoskeleton-wearing Preston Payne Clayface III! That's genius!"

Obviously, my guess was off, but I still think that would've been a cool way to go with him. Especially if Hagen totally lost his mind and fell in love with a wax sculpture woman the way Payne did.

Yes, I'm aware he was alluding to "Growing Pains" (which in itself was intriguing because it was originally a BTAS idea with Dick Grayson before years later they made it into a TNBA episode). I just meant as a consolation in the fullness of time within the DCAU, we eventually sorta of got a Lady Clayface with Inque on Batman Beyond.

Preston Payne. Someday he'll show up in animated form. I think in all animation so far, he's only gotten one shout-out in the Joker-centric episode of Batman: The Brave & The Bold (a portrait in a bar).

Yeah. The "dissolving people with his touch" gimmick is too rough for kid's TV, I'm sure. (And to clarify, I never imagined that BTAS would use that part. I mainly just wanted to see them use the cool Marshall Rogers design for Clayface III's exoskeleton.)

Marshall Rogers doesn't get talked about enough. His cover for the Laughing Fish story is seared into my memory, seeing that in the comic shop - what is this? gotta read it!

Yup, but then again there's PG-13 and up content out there in streaming and DTVs where he could show up. And not even counting that, they managed to use Mano on kid's TV so it's not entirely out of the question.

That kind of reminds me of the second Ventriloquist (Peyton Riley) Dini came up with in his Detective Comics run. I wonder if was connected or related at all.

Am I totally mis-remembering or was there a Preston Payne reference in Beware the Batman where the Key mentions doing something for him?

Maybe Dini had the vague idea of introducing a moll to the Ventriloquist/Scarface dynamic that eventually evolved into that character.

That was a random criminal who gained the new identity of "Mr. Payne" from the Key's forgery. There's no strong connection beyond the name and the theme of identity change.

Which one? They're both bangers.

It wouldn't surprise me if that was the start of it. Writers rarely totally throw away old ideas.

I think so, he mentions that run in the same interview/timestamp. EDIT: Yup, he confirms he borrowed bits of it for the female Ventriloquist for his Detective Comics run.

I owned that comic once! I was (and still am) convinced that Marshall Rogers drew the Joker as Vincent Price.

The one with Batman in front of the Flatiron Building with the comic's creative team dead at his feet is also way cool.

Maybe, but IIRC, he went back to the original inspiration of Conrad Veidt in The Man Who Laughs. Rogers probably says for sure in either Comic Book Artist Special Edition #2 or The Batcave Companion. Both of those discuss the Steve Englehart/Marshall Rogers run pretty extensively.

(I'd check my copies to confirm, but they're both in storage right now.)

That has to be it! I never listened to that podcast so I'm certain he must've talked about in multiple places; if anyone finds it elsewhere let us know. Too bad that DTV wasn't made though, I really would've wanted to see that. Wish that had been the 'last bow' for the BTAS gang instead of Mystery of the Batwoman or Bats & Harley Quinn. Going out on a high note with a Dini script just feels right, doesn't it?

What's even more curious is that a couple minutes right before 1 hr 15 min, he talks about the DTV and not only was it those three stories of Batman and Green Arrow (vs. Cavalier I guess if Tucker adapted that from the script, too, for his Brave/Bold episode), Batman and Zatanna vs. Klarion, and Batman and Plastic Man vs. Scarface and Ventriloquists but it would have also formally introduced Bat-Mite in a Batman-Superman team up to deal with Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite!
I did have an idea for, after we did Mxyzptlk in Superman, Alan Burnett and I actually wrote a direct to video that was never made. It was parceled up here and there. We used some other ideas but it was a direct to video and the last time I looked at it, it was sort of 'Batman's Interesting Team-ups' and framework was Batman is on a mission somewhere and Robin has been told 'stay in the cave, this is too dangerous' and Robin wants to quit because 'Batman isn't taking me seriously.' And Alfred told him of three times he had to team up with another hero and how that worked out. So there was a Batman-Superman team up with Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite that was a lot of fun and was Bruce Wayne goes to Clark Kent and goes, "I think I'm going nuts." "Why?" "Well, because I've been having these hallucinations." And he explains what they are. And Superman is, "You're not crazy. It's a guy. I know the guy." And it turns out it's not Mxy doing it. It's actually his cousin, you know. We made Bat-Mite his cousin who was a Batman fanboy. So it was big 'who can outdo each other,' and you know they're causing massive destruction. And Superman and Batman are trying to stop them or outthink them or something. There was that initially. That was the--a big part of that direct to video
