EDIT: Weta Digital will be involved, and it will take place two centuries before the main trilogy.
Making it the first LOTR film in ten years.

"“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” Announces Producers and Debuts New Footage at Annecy"

Lord-of-the-Rings-The-War-of-the-Rohirrim_FL1-e1718373663714.jpg

The Annecy International Animated Film Festival hosted a panel for the new Lord of the Rings animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Moderated by Andy Serkis, director Kenji Kamiyama was on hand to present a 20 minute preview. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh were confirmed to be the film’s executive producers.

Animated Lord of the Rings adaptations have come a long way since the days of 1977’s Rankin-Bass Hobbit and 1980’s Return of the King. It was largely thanks to Peter Jackson’s big budget Lord of the Rings Trilogy (beginning with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001) that Lord of the Rings-related movies became viable again. Jackson has had so much influence on Tolkien’s work that it seems any current Lord of the Rings project, from Amazon Prime’s Rings of Power series to the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum, has incorporated elements that originated with Jackson’s films.

The War of the Rohirrim is based on the work of author J.R.R. Tolkien. The fortress of Helm’s Deep was a pivotal location in The Lord of the Rings, but Tolkien only revealed its history in one of the appendices in Return of the King (originally published in 1955). The movie will take place in the year 2758, 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings begin. It will tell the tale of Rohan being invaded by Dunlendings and the response of Rohan’s king, Helm Hammerhand. The movie will focus on Hammerhand’s daughter, who Tolkien never named but is now called Hèra (voiced by Gaia Wise)."

These new stills have me excited beyond belief.

Lord of Rings WOTR, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, and The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3,
all coming up later this year. Crazy lucky.

A logline has been posted
Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg—a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm's Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.

I like the animation and tone of this trailer. The transition from footage of the trilogy to the animation was pretty cool to see. Hera looks like a compelling protagonist, looking to prove herself outside of the role that is expected of her. I'm looking forward to this.

It's also nice to see 2d animation more in theatres.

I thought without orcs (the best part of Middle Earth) for enemies, it wouldn't look that great, but it actually looks amazing.

Looking forward to this. I want to see it in theaters!

"The Trailer’s Out For Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim"

lord-of-the-rings-war-of-the-rohirrim-trailer-feature.jpg

"Until now, the only way you could see Tolkien’s world of Middle Earth animated was to dig up the old Ralph Bakshi movie. That’ll change in a big way when Warner Bros releases Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim in theaters this December. Not to dismiss Ralph’s effort, but this film is one giant visual upgrade.

Based on a tale from one of the LOTR appendices, War Of The Rohirrim focuses on Princess Hèra Hammerhand as she is about to face betrothal to a nobleman she doesn’t like. However, not only does her father King Helm Hammerhand share her disgust for the man, he punches him so hard that he dies! That act makes the man’s son, Wulf, so mad he declares war on the kingdom of Rohan. Now Hèra must lead the resistance and take down Wulf’s forces.

The voice at the beginning of the trailer is Miranda Otto, the actress who played Eowyn in the Peter Jackson trilogy. However, don’t look for too many connections between those films and this one. Despite Jackson’s name being stamped boldly at the beginning, he only has a producer role here. This is an anime film directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Eden Of The East)."

FYI: Hèra Hammerhand is incorrect. it should read: Hèra daughter of Helm. Hammerhand is an honorific title bestowed upon King Helm, not a surname.

I do wish that the full cast announcement had included more of the roles for the supporting cast members.
