8/1/23: Rumor is The Mandalorian season 4 is being considered for a movie instead of on Disney+

12/13: Other reports it will remain a streaming series but it won't absorb any story points from Ahsoka season 2.

A theatrical movie was announced - The Mandalorian & Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau, and produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni. Production begins later this year.

1/9: Very surprising. While on one side, I'm thinking 'here we go again with them stuffing their movie lineup prematurely' but on the other side, the fan in me is super excited this duo gets a movie. I'm curious if it will a stand alone story (e.g. bounty hunting a Imperial remnant big fish) or will tie into the greater canon of the lead up to the Filoni movie or when it's set for that matter (e.g. set between season 3 and season 4). Will it shed any further revelations on either's backstory? Time will tell. Cautiously optimistic about it.

1/10: Rumored to be the start of a trilogy.

1/11: Supposedly season 4 leads directly into the Mandalorian & Grogu movie.

2/6: Production List says it's reportedly set to begin filming on June 17.

2/7: Disney has released an updated theatrical schedule via press release and 2 untitled SW movies are listed for May 22, 2026 and December 18, 2026.

2/20: Reportedly films June to October at a $120 million budget.

They will film in California and benefit from one of the largest tax credit awarded by the state. It's also apparently the first Star wars movie to be filmed there.

Disney really needs this one. It's smart to rely on the most consistently well received corner of the modern live-action Star Wars universe. I just hope that they really pull it together here, with the best story they can in 2 hours.
