One of the biggest recent changes in the anime industry has been the embrace of legally streaming video. Though once a possibility that was just talked about, there are now literally dozens of anime that are available for free online at a variety of different services. Some are classics, some are recent series, and a few are even fresh from the Japanese airwaves.
As this trend continues to grow, it can be a challenge for a fan to stay on top of all the changes and new additions. Hence this thread, a catch-all location for fresh news related to legal anime viewing on the internet. Have new episodes of a series been uploaded? Have you seen news of a new stream? Post it here. General discussion about the various streaming services is also fair game.
As you can see this thread also contains a very long, comprehensive list for the anime series, OVA's, and movies that are currently available online for free. Our goal is to keep this resource updated and current. I've done my best to be thorough, but if you notice anything that needs to be updated or fixed just post a reply. The master list will be updated periodically as needed.
Curious about what's streaming and running in Japan right now? Visit the appendix in post #7 for a simulcast schedule here.
Now, on to the shows!

The Anime Forum Guide For Free, Legally Streaming Anime
Note: With a few exceptions here and there, series descriptions are official or are from a third party source. Most were not written by me, so credit goes where it's due. If you see a description that you feel is lacking, submissions will be accepted for a replacement.
These are the major streaming services you will encounter here most often.
- Anime Network: Not to be confused with the on-demand channel, Anime Network mostly offers streams of anime licensed by ADV Films/Section23 to the United States and Canada. Recently its streams were made available for the United Kingdom, and a sister site for the UK was added. Many of its streams require registration to work, but it's free. There is a paid subscription option for those that want everything it has to offer.
- Anime News Network Player: A unique creature, the ANN player is mostly a hub of sorts for streams from multiple sources. Some may prefer its interface or video player compared to other services.
- Crunchyroll: Streaming legally since Spring 2009, Crunchyroll offers many streams of anime that are currently running in Japan as well as several unique streams that are unavailable elsewhere. Perhaps most notably, many of its streams are global (outside of Japan) and viewable by most countries. For a fee membership allows greater access, but this list includes what it offers for free.
- FUNimation Video: The player of choice for FUNimation Entertainment. The vast majority of FUNimation streams are available via this service. This service currently streams to the United States and Canada.
- Hulu: A mainstream, free video website for TV shows. All streams are currently limited to the United States only.
- Joost: A third party video site streaming to the United States and Canada. It also streams to the United Kingdom via Joost UK. So far, it seems to mostly offer an alternative service for some FUNimation titles.
- Youtube Shows: Among other cartoons youtube streams many anime from Bandai Entertainment, FUNimation, and more to the U.S. and Canada. For youtube, this video quality is as good as it gets.
