For these peaceful days――there’s a secret behind it all.

A secret organization that prevents crimes: “DA - Direct Attack”. And their group of all-girl agents: “Lycoris”.

This peaceful everyday life is all thanks to these young girls.

The elite Chisato Nishikigi is the strongest Lycoris agent of all time. Alongside is Takina Inoue, the talented but mysterious Lycoris. They work together at one of its branches–Café LycoReco.

Here, the orders this café takes range from coffee and sweets to childcare, shopping, teaching Japanese to foreign students, etc. It's mostly tasks unbefitting of Lycoris.

The free-spirited and optimistic pacifist, Chisato. And the cool-headed and efficient Takina. The chaotic everyday lives of this mismatched duo begin!

Opening theme "ALIVE" ClariS
Ending theme "Hana no tou" Sayuri

Episode 1 "Easy does it" - January 20/21, 2024 (Original release: July 2, 2022)
Takina Inoue, a secret agent who protects the security of Japan called a “Lycoris,” is ordered to transfer to the café LycoReco in consequence of a certain incident. Takina is enthusiastic about returning to DA now that she’s buddied up with the super-elite No. 1 Lycoris (?) Chisato, but her job at LycoReco is just one weird thing after another!?

Welp, since no one else made it.

Moe girls with guns. A true staple of the anime subculture.

I remember this show when it was Gunslinger Girl.

Such cheerful music amidst all the shooting.

#1 in public safety. Provided that violent criminals don't count as members of the public.

Employing high school girls as assassins. I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I am never going to be able to not hear "Licorice" when they say that.

We're just sending chirpy teenage girls into hostage situations now?

Ever hear of something called overkill?

You're being transferred for disobeying orders. And no TV for a week.

Woodsy the Owl has a terrorist cell?

I'm upset because I haven't found a husband!

I liked what the producers did with the opening credits. Rather than displaying a creditless version of the first scene with added text, someone animated censor boxes to cover the Japanese text before they even appear, and insert English text to the censor boxes. Very clever.

Bust still, I don't like it when anime series don't play the opening theme on the first episode. The only exception is for those that use the opening theme as the first episode's ending theme.

The stern serious one and the lively bubbly one. Classic team up.

What is that building? It looks like a biblical angel exploded.

I smell a Miho-Kiyo!

A Miho-Kiyo in LycoReco.

Looks like someone pried off the top of Tokyo Tower and jabbed it into a pterodactyl nest.

First day jitters.

This show's throwing a lot at us all at once.

"You got any questions?"
"Too many to count."
I'm with ya, Takina.

So far all I have is Gunslinger Girl meets Psycho-Pass.

"Another reason to enjoy going to LycoReco."
Uggh, not one of THOSE cops.

"All I did was shoot up a room full of bad guys with a machine gun. The hostage didn't die, what's the problem?"

Doesn't Toonami usually post seizure warnings at the start of the episode?

That's a symbol of peace?

Going from a hostage crisis to tracking down stalkers.

"Help! They trained themselves to put me in a bag!"

"I believe they have no intent of killing her, which is why I had to use lethal force."

Oh, so she doesn't kill them. I like this girl.

Taylor Swift starts dating Travis Kelce and suddenly everyone on the Internet wants her dead.

Or there could be a drug deal going on in the background.

Slumber party with the victim!

Honey, your client's in there!

Buttface cat doesn't have quite the same mysterious appeal of a laughing face.

Two high school girls. Cafe waitresses by day, gun-toting peace keepers by night. And thus we have a series!

Speaking of GUNSLINGER GIRL, I've been dying for the rest of the manga to be adapted in anime form. We didn't get any more episodes after the Il Teatrino OVAs.

After watching all of Lycoris Recoil before Toonami aired the first episode, I feel I wanted Black Cat to be given a revival treatment in form of a modern reboot or some spinoff series focusing on certain characters. I even came up with an idea of Eve, Rinslet and Kyoko working at a Japanese-style cafe in the day and take on bounty-hunting "sweeper" quests outside their work hours. If Saya finally had her own spinoff series and "multiverse" timeline, I could see her alive and well throughout, and picture her as one of the cafe workers when she isn't "sweeping" bounties.

She has a gun that shoots zip ties?

The Laughing...Raccoon? Badger? Bulldog?

Is she just going to whine about how she's still single?

Red oni, blue oni?

I liked the first episode. The premise is Gunslinger Girl almost to a T but the execution is far more Railgun, and...hey, we're probably never getting either of those on Toonami, so it'll do. I'll even watch ads for 87-cent Viagra with atrocious sound mixing.

I think it has something to do with the amounts of gun fire, as they can cause rapidly-flashing images. I remember watching YouTube videos about light gun games, and the video makers often warn us viewers about the flashing images since the light guns relied on the flashing images to register inputs. Feels like you're actually firing lasers or flashbangs.

So a secret police whose agents are teen girls. Okay, definitely an anime.

Ha ha, classic partnership. And yeah, reminded me of Gunslinger Girl minus Italy and the cybernetics. Noir a little.

Wow, they threw Takina under the bus to cover their ass after they get hacked.

lmao, the yakuza were just being delivered coffee.

Boy, you just want to snap a selfie and you catch a crime in progress in the background. I think we've all been there. :p

Oooh, Chisato now uses non-lethal weapons. Upbeat attitude. I see. Bit of a Rurouni Kenshin turn after her bad old days.

And cue the benevolent mega rich entrepreneur that's really the bad guy.

Here's the opening theme and video "Alive". Should play in next week's episode
